An Appraisal of the Efficacy of formative Assessment in English Language Teaching Setting in Northern Eastern Nigeria

Employing a mixed-methods approach, this research melds quantitative data analysis and qualitative insights to evaluate formative assessment's influence on English Language teaching classrooms. Through surveys, classroom observations, and interviews with educators and students, we assess the extent to which formative assessment strategies are integrated into English Language teaching practices, their alignment with curriculum objectives, and their ability to address the distinctive challenges of language learning in Nigeria. Our findings underscore the strengths of formative assessment, demonstrating its capacity to boost student engagement, self-regulation, and overall learning outcomes. Additionally, this research illuminates existing barriers and limitations hindering its broader adoption. Furthermore, it contributes to the discourse on educational policy development by highlighting the implications of formative assessment for curriculum design and teacher training. This study intends to inform various stakeholders, including policymakers, curriculum developers, and English Language teaching practitioners, about the potential advantages of formative assessment in the Nigerian English Language teaching milieu. By spotlighting effective strategies and areas necessitating improvement, it endeavors to promote evidence-based decision-making, thereby elevating the quality of English language education in Nigeria. In sum, this research offers a comprehensive assessment of formative assessment's efficacy in Nigerian English Language teaching settings, addressing its promises and challenges. Ultimately, it seeks to advance language education practices in this diverse and dynamic context.
