Utilization of Information Communication Technology among Nurses in General Hospital Minna, Niger State

The purpose of the study is to find out utilization of information communication technology among nurses in general hospital Minna, Niger State. Four research objectives and four research questions were formulated for the study. The theory which was reviewed for this study was the Reasoned Action Approach (RAA). 90 respondents were used for the study. Researcher developed questionnaire was used for data collection. This was administered to respondents in an interview format for about 10-20 minutes but a good number of nurse completed their questionnaire by themselves. An important observation of this study is that in contrast to the findings of so many studies that majority of are female, findings shows that respondent have average knowledge of ICT usage, factors militating against use of ICT among nurses ranging from Lack of interest in ICT applications, Limited knowledge of computer skills, Cost of procuring ICT equipment; Limited access to ICT equipment, Complexity of the equipment, Lack of user training in ICT usage, Erratic power supply, Poor organizational policy on ICT use for nurses, Lack of practical-oriented training on information technology during nursing education, Fear of adapting to change. In terms of knowledge of the skilled nurse with computer, from the result obtained, 78 (86.6%) of the total 90 respondents claimed to be computer literate. Moreover, only five of these 86.6% could use more than 4 applications which included Microsoft word, Microsoft Excel, Internet Explorer and games. The remaining 74 of 7 respondents could not operate more than two. In conclusion, the study showed that all nurses in General Hospital Minna irrespective of the rank or gender have an averagely positive perception positive perception of ICT adoption and use in health services.
