Abstract

The recent establishment of tertiary institutions has sparked significant controversy and political disputes among the communities where they are situated. This is primarily due to the various benefits associated with the presence of these institutions, such as economic, social, and productive growth. Ibadan is a prime example of this, with several tertiary institutions located there, including the University of Ibadan, University College Hospital, Technical University, Kola Daisi University, Polytechnic Ibadan, Tower Polytechnic, Ibadan City Polytechnic, Mufutau Lanihun College of Education, Al-Ibadan College of Education, School of Nursing and Hygiene in Eleyele, and the School of Nursing at UCH, among others. This paper aims to assess the impact of tertiary institutions on the socio-economic development of Ibadan. Data for the study was gathered using a questionnaire, and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the data. The findings indicate that the presence of tertiary institutions in Ibadan has significantly improved the standard of living for people in the surrounding areas, facilitated interaction among people from diverse regions, and created employment opportunities, fostering peaceful coexistence. In conclusion, the establishment of tertiary institutions in any area serves as a catalyst for rapid development, provided their activities are properly regulated and monitored.
