Abstract

This study is on income diversification of activities of fadama and non-fadama(rain-fed) farmers in Bauchi state. Its objectives majorly is to investigate the level of fadama and non fadama income diversifications activities. A stratified random sampling was adopted as sampling technique. Data across farmer types were collected through questionnaire administered to 900 sampled farmers with 824 questionnaires returned and analyzed using descriptive, statistics, Diversification index, etc. The study found fadama has help provide portfolio adjustment through an improved income generation from farming activities. Simpsons Index of Diversification (SID) shows fadama farmers are more Diversified, with diversification index (0.670), while rain-fed farmers or non-fadama farmers(0.0336).Thus, fadama farmers undertake additional income generating activities than non-fadama farmers. Consequent upon this, the study recommends sustained Government investment and expansion of the program and inclusivity to take care of communities within and without the fadama localities in the area and the country at large.
