Abstract

The study assessed the practices of solid was management in Abattoirs in Bwari Area Council of FCT-Abuja, Nigeria. The objectives of the study identify the types of the waste generated in the abattoirs in the study area, assess the role of scavengers in solid waste management in the study area, evaluate the roles of agencies responsible for solid waste management in abattoirs, in the study area, and identify the challenges militating against the achievement sustainable management of solid waste in the study area. The study adopted a descriptive research method for obtaining necessary primary data to give clear understanding of the research objectives. The study involved samples of 305 respondents drawn from operators of abattoirs and staff of AEPB. The Non-probability (convenient) sampling was used to randomly select respondents to collect data, while a deductive approach was used, where primary data was gathered through issuing of a set of structured questionnaires. The Descriptive statistic was employed for analysing the data collected. The results revealed that the major waste generated in abattoirs in the study area include animal dung, blood, stomach and intestinal contents, bones and waste tissues. Other categories of wate generated include metal, plastics/rubber, food scrap, paper, ash and dirt, as well as glass. The result of the study also revealed that the role of role of scavengers in solid waste management in the study area include collection and sorting of waste products, movement waste to where it could be used, reducing the volume of waste products generated in the study area, reducing Harmful effect of wastes on the environment, help in keeping the environment clean help and recycling plants get raw materials. More so, the results of the study revealed that the roles of agencies responsible for solid waste management in abattoirs the findings of the study include removal, transportation and dispose of generated waste, clear and maintain public drainage facilities, street cleaning and clearing of abandoned vehicles, prepare and periodically up-date the master plan of waste collection and disposal in the study area. Based on these findings the study recommended that relevant authorities responsible for solid waste management in the study area to prepare to prepare sustainable guideline and framework for the achievement of sustainable waste management in the study area.More so,abattoir waste recyclingopportunities, should be harnessed towards creating a hygienic abattoir, as well as to enhance employment opportunity and wealth creation.
