Assessing the Effectiveness of E-governance in Enhancing Transparency in Public Service Delivery in Lagos State’s Education Districts
Abstract
In today’s digital age, the demand for transparency and accountability in public service delivery is growing, especially in sectors like education. Lagos State, a pioneer of digital governance in Nigeria, has implemented several e-governance tools aimed at transforming public education. Yet, despite these innovations, questions remain about their actual impact on service transparency. This study investigates the effectiveness of e-governance in enhancing transparency in Lagos State’s Education Districts III and VI, addressing a critical gap in existing literature which has often overlooked education-focused evaluations of digital governance. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 231 respondents across the districts. Findings reveal strong support for the role of e-governance in promoting transparency, accountability, accessibility, and satisfaction. However, key challenges identified include infrastructural inadequacies, digital illiteracy, and administrative resistance to change. The study concludes that while e-governance platforms are widely embraced, structural challenges must be addressed to fully realize their potential. It recommends targeted investments in ICT infrastructure, digital literacy programs, and administrative reforms. These steps are crucial for ensuring inclusive, transparent, and efficient public service delivery in the educational sector, reinforcing the broader promise of digital governance in Nigeria.
