Renewable Energy Resources Use and Sustainable Development in Nigeria
A Study of Kaduna State, Nigeria
Abstract
Access to clean, affordable, and environmentally friendly energy is a condition for attainment of sustainable development. This study examined renewable energy resources and their utilization to achieve sustainable development in Nigeria, with special attention and consideration to solar energy utilization in Kaduna state. A survey method was adopted in the study whereby 300 copies of a single set of questions were distributed across the three senatorial zone of Kaduna State using multistage sampling techniques. The data obtained was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings of the study revealed that majority of the respondents were aware of solar energy as alternative energy source at home, business and the community. They were also aware that solar energy is environmentally friendly and can mitigate climate change. The study also found that majority of the household used solar energy for mainly lighting and drying. The research concluded with recommendations to raise awareness and encourage the use of solar energy sources to mitigate the impact of climate change and foster the realization of sustainable development goals among others.
