Relationship between Domestic Violence and Aggressive Behaviour among Senior Secondary School Students in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria
Abstract
This study examined the relationship between domestic violence and aggressive behaviour among secondary school students in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria. The study had four research objectives, four research questions and four hypotheses. Correlational design was used. The population was 6,232 students. Purposive sampling technique was used to select sample of 361 students used for the study. Data collected from the sampled respondents were analysed and the four hypothesis were tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics. All the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The results obtained showed that inverse relationship exists between Domestic Violence and Physical Aggressive behaviour of secondary school students in Ilorin Metropolis (r = 0.220, p = 0.000). Inverse relationship exists between Domestic Violence and Verbal Aggressive behaviour of secondary school students in Ilorin Metropolis (r = 0.298, p = 0.000). Based on the outcome of the study, it was recommended that; Parent and grown up adults in the family should be enlightened on the negative impact of domestic violence and the need to avoid such situations and practices. Counselling and Psychological services should be effectively deployed in schools to help students with domestic violence exposure understand ways they can develop resilience in-spite their experiences.
