Abstract

This study examined the effects of the use of video instructional media on interest and academic performance among senior secondary school mathematics students in Katsina State. This study was guided by four (4) objectives, from which four (4) research questions were converted into four (4) null hypotheses that were analyzed. The study used a quasi-experimental design that utilized a pretest, post-test, experimental, and control group design. The population covered a total of 11,247 SS II students, comprising 6,198 males and 5,049 females from 22 public secondary schools in Funtua ZEQA Katsina. A sample of 242 senior secondary school mathematics students was randomly selected from four schools in the study area. Two separate intact classes from two different schools were used for the study. The research instruments used for data collection were the academic performance test and students’ algebraic interest inventory, with reliability coefficients of 0.94 and 0.79, respectively. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer research questions one and two; mean rank and sum of rank statistics were used to answer research questions three (3) and four (4); independent sample t-test statistics were used to test the research hypotheses one and two; and Mann-Whitney was used to test the research hypotheses three (3) and four (4). The results showed that there was a significant effect of video instructional media on students’ interest and academic performance in mathematics. The analysis of the data clearly indicated that students were interested in video instructional media and that it influenced their academic performance. It was identified that the effect was higher for the experimental group than the control group. The study concluded that the use of video instructional media can influence students’ interest and academic performance in mathematics positively. Hence, the study recommended that the use of video instructional media should be employed in teaching mathematics in senior secondary schools for its effectiveness in teaching and learning mathematics.
