Abstract

This study examined the Usage of Social Media Platforms among Muslim Youths in Niger State, Nigeria. Two (2) objectives guided the study which include examine the social media platforms frequently used by Muslim youths in Niger State and examine the extent to which Muslim youths use internet to enhance acquisition of Islamic Knowledge in Niger State. Two (2) research questions were asked to guide the study and they were in line with the stated objectives. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The target population of the study was all the Muslim Youths currently studying in tertiary institutions in Niger State. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to select 180 Muslim youths from tertiary institutions in the three Senatorial Zones of the State. That is, 60 Muslim youths were chosen from Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (Zone, A), 60 from Niger State College of Education, Minna (Zone, B) and 60 from Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru (Zone, C). A self designed questionnaire tagged “Social Media Usage among Muslim Youths (SMUMYQ)” was used to collect data for the study. Three (3) research experts vet the instrument and their observations were incorporated in the final draft of the instrument. The instrument was pilot tested at Federal Polytechnic, Bida. The data collected from the pilot test was subjected to reliability test using the split half method and the reliability coefficient yielded 0.84 using Cronbach’s Alpha Method. Descriptive statistics of frequency counts and simple percentage were used to analyze the bio-data of the respondents, while mean was used to answer the research questions. Finding of the study revealed that Facebook is the social media platforms frequently used by Muslim youths in Niger State. The study also revealed that majority of the Muslim youths in Niger State do check their social media accounts above 10 times daily and often used internet to enhance the acquisition of Islamic Knowledge. The study recommended that Islamic organizations and Dawaah groups should constantly organize awareness programmes for Muslim youths in tertiary institutions of learning on the pros and cons for using social media platforms.
