Behavior Modification Parameters Guidance Counsellors can Apply for Enhancement of National Cohesiveness among Students in Public Senior Secondary Schools in Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT, Abuja
Abstract
The paper focused on the behaviour modification parameters guidance counsellors can apply for enhancement of national cohesiveness among students in secondary schools in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja, Nigeria. Survey research design was used and two research questions were set for the study. The population of the study was 13,142 senior and junior secondary schools’ students in eleven public senior and junior secondary schools in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja, (https://fct emis.org/list-public Schools 2022). The sample of the study was 500 students in public senior and junior secondary schools in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja, (those students were used to assess the thirty-five guidance counsellors). The instrument was validated by experts in the Department of Guidance and Counselling, University of Abuja, Abuja. The reliability of the instrument was carried out by conducting a pilot study, test-retest method was used for collation of data, crombach alpha statistics was used to analyse the data and a reliability coefficient index of 0.66 was obtained. Mean statistics was used to analyse the research questions. The findings of the study revealed that guidance counsellors did not apply behaviour modification parameters to mold students behaviour, hence did not achieve national cohesiveness. Based on the study findings, the researcher recommended that the secondary school management should organize training on behaviour modification for guidance counsellors to enhance national cohesiveness among students.
