Impact of ICT on Women’s Socio-Economic Empowerment in Sardauna and Gashaka Local Government Areas of Taraba State, Nigeria
Abstract
This study examines the impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on the socio-economic empowerment of women in the Sardauna and Gashaka Local Government Areas of Taraba State, Nigeria. The increasing integration of ICT in various sectors has been identified as a transformative tool for social and economic development, particularly for marginalized communities. Through a mixed-methods approach, this research explores how access to ICT platforms—such as mobile phones, the internet, and social media—has influenced women's ability to improve their livelihoods, access educational resources, and engage in economic activities. The findings suggest that ICT has played a significant role in enhancing women's participation in small-scale businesses, improving access to health information, and providing educational opportunities. However, challenges such as limited infrastructure, low digital literacy, and socio-cultural barriers continue to hinder the full realization of ICT's potential. The study recommends targeted interventions to improve ICT access and skills training for women, with a focus on bridging the digital divide and promoting gender-inclusive policies. This research contributes to the understanding of how ICT can be leveraged as a tool for gender equality and socio-economic empowerment in rural Nigerian communities.
