Perceived Compatibility, Communication and Sexual Satisfaction among Married Men and Women in Tertiary Institutions

Abstract

Embarking on a successful marriage path requires more understanding of the complexities of it. There are times when storm and stress caused by endless reasons within the personality structures of the individual, the environment, the cultural environment and the dyadic interactive nature. It is in this backdrop that this present research aims to identify the relationship of perceived sexual compatibility communication and sexual satisfaction among tertiary institution married men and women. Correlation type of descriptive research design was utilized in this study. Three hundred and forty-two (342) respondents were selected through the utilization of stratified random sampling techniques. Data were collected using Perceived Sexual Compatibility Scale (PSCS) (r = 0.82-0.72); Communicational Scale (COS) (r = 0.68-0.78) and Index of Sexual Satisfaction Scale (ISSS) (r = 0.76). Data were analyzed using percentages ANOVA and Multiple Regression. The finding revealed that perceived sexual compatibility and communication were positively correlated with sexual satisfaction {F(2,340) = 13.987}. The regression analysis indicated that the two variables combined accounted for 36.6% of the variance in sexual satisfaction. Communication was the best predictor, followed by perceived sexual compatibility. Based on the above findings, it was recommended that sexuality education and premarital counseling programmes be included in school curriculum to prepare students towards happy married life.
