Budget Transparency and Accountability in Nigeria Local Government Areas
Abstract
This study examines budget transparency and accountability in Nigeria local government areas. Lack of integrity, transparency and accountability at the local level of governance definitely constitutes a heavy toll on the well-being of ordinary Nigerians. The local government administration in Nigeria has been befuddled with allegations of mal-administration and mismanagement of public funds, leading to recent public outbursts for a local government review. This is informed by the high rate of corruption that is embedded in the Nigeria Government System which has led to ambiguity and uncertainty about the stewardship of the Nigeria Government to the populace. The study concluded that enhancing transparency therefore requires deliberate institutional commitment supported by stronger monitoring systems, clearer reporting standards, and active community engagement. The study recommended among others that to improve transparency and accountability in budget implementation, there is a need to adopt digital financial management tools at the local government level. Introducing automated accounting software, e-procurement platforms, and real-time expenditure tracking systems can help streamline financial operations and reduce leakages.
